Russia’s new ship projects at Euronaval 2010

Russia’s new ship projects at Euronaval 2010

The Russian President and the Russian government pay much attention to reequipping the Russian Navy and developing the national shipbuilding industry. All ships designed for the Russian Navy usually have export versions.

Following a technical inspection, the US Navy was forced to withdraw from its inventory five Cyclone-class coastal patrol ships based in Bahrain, in September. Operation of five other ships of this class deployed at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base (NAB), Virginia, was simultaneously limited. The reason for the withdrawal was the deformation of steel hull frames caused by intensive operation of the ships.

Naval research and development at Krylov Center after 1991

The Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (KSRI) is a major naval research and development center in Russia and the world. Its history dates back to 1894 when Russia’s first model basin for development (optimization) of hull shapes, propulsors, shipbuilding materials investigations, mechanisms and others was built in St. Petersburg.

Network-centric warfare requires a centralized monitoring of data sources, controls, weapon platforms, and weapons proper. In other words, the chain of command of the Armed Forces acquires and processes a huge amount of information fed by all external sources thus ensuring «superiority in knowledge» about the enemy.

Export Submarines of the Rubin Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering

In 2011, the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering will celebrate its 110th anniversary. On January 4, 1901 (December 22, 1900, Old Style), the Submarine Construction Commission was established to become the first Russian professional organization intended for design and construction of submarines.

The Zelenodolsk Design Bureau saw two major events in late August 2010. The second Gepard-3.9-class frigate developed by the Zelenodolsk Design Bureau for the Vietnamese Navy sailed from the Zelenodolsk Plant named after A.M. Gorky to Kronshtadt on August 25, 2010. Both Gepard-class frigates will leave for Vietnam by the turn of the year after undergoing sea trials.

The term «corvette» is used quite widely today, but there is no unambiguous and clear definition of this type of combat ships. Every country uses its own official warship classification so ships with widely different mixes of armament and missions are referred to as the corvettes.

The Vikramaditya aircraft carrier currently being upgraded by Russia for India is changing its appearance right before one’s eyes. Both national experts and Indian Defense Ministry officials note changes in the aircraft carrier being retrofitted at the Sevmash shipyard. The enterprise has recently been inspected by a team of Indian experts headed by Vice Admiral Nadell Niranjan Kumar, Controller Warship Production & Acquisition Integrated Headquarters, India’s Ministry of Defense (Navy).

The second Gepard-3.9-class frigate sailed off the wharf of the Zelenodolsk Plant named after A.M. Gorky to the Baltic Sea in late August 2010. The frigate is to enter service with the Vietnamese Navy. Now the type ship and the second frigate are undergoing comprehensive tests.

The Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, offers customers a complete cycle of ship construction from structural and low magnetic steels, aluminum, and fiberglass. Its shipbuilding program encompasses ships of various types: missile boats, naval minesweepers, patrol ships, work and passenger vessels.

The Project 12150 Mangust fast patrol boat (PBF) is a fast skimming boat featuring an aluminum-magnesium alloy V-shaped hull. It is designed to operate in territorial waters on call, enforce the specified navigational discipline in outer and inner harbors and littoral areas, and discharge tasks facing maritime police, customs services and the fishery protection inspection in offshore areas.

Ametist-developed multifunction radar/optronic fire control systems

Since the 1950s, the Ametist Design Bureau has been a flagship designer of fire control radars and optronic fire control systems for naval and coastal guns operated by the Russian Navy. Within this period the Ametist Design Bureau has developed almost all fire control radars mounted on national combat ships and vessels of more than 20 foreign customers.

Radio-electronic systems developed by the Granit-Electron Concern JSC for export ships and new-generation submarines

When designing and manufacturing surface ships and new-generation submarines, Russian design bureaus and shipyards widely use radio-electronic systems developed by the Granit-Electron Concern JSC famous for its airborne and shipborne radar systems.

The Salyut Research and Production Enterprise JSC incorporated into the Morinformsistema-Agat Concern is one of Russia’s flagship enterprises developing, manufacturing and repairing radars for combat ships and ground-based radar surveillance stations. Package approach to after-sales service: A crucial factor in the export of defense products

Analysis of the world arms market trends pinpoints a number of factors determining the competitiveness of Russian defense products supplied to foreign customers. After-sales service that supports products throughout their life cycle is one of the key factors.

Underwater surveillance systems

Underwater surveillance systems

An underwater surveillance system allows its owner-state to monitor littoral areas on a non-stop basis. Such a state is called a naval power, rather than a country bordering on a sea. The Central Design Bureau of Hydroacoustics of the Kliver Science & Production Association has developed several versions of an underwater surveillance system.

The Special Mechanical Engineering Design Bureau (Russian acronym KBSM), a joint stock company founded in March 1945 as the Central Naval Artillery Design Bureau, currently is a diversified design organization and part of the Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern. It is engaged in the development of launch complexes and equipment for virtually all services and arms of the Russian Armed Forces.

State and prospects for using thermal power in naval undersea weapons and other underwater vehicles

Currently, naval undersea weapons (NUW) equipped with thermal propulsion systems undoubtedly offer the best range and operating characteristics as evidenced by a comparative analysis of both domestic and foreign torpedoes. At the same time, the development of thermal torpedoes requires more sophisticated technologies.

The Duet is a 30mm AK-630M-2 shipborne double-gun close-in weapon system with radar or optronic remote control systems and a target selector (a backup control station).
